> How to Find a Dentist Who Meets Your Needs

Have you ever been in this situation? You are on your way to drop the kids off at school and the car starts to backfire and jump around like it is possessed by demons. You pull off on the shoulder where it is safe and breathe a sigh of relief.

Then, you reach for the cell phone. Who do you call? Well, most of us would call our husbands. However, it would probably be easier for both you and him if you just called your favorite mechanic first.

You have a favorite mechanic, don’t you? If you don’t, you know where to find one. Unfortunately, finding a dentist is not as easy as looking through the yellow pages.

You can find dozens of listings for dentists in the yellow pages, but until you actually visit with each one, you can’t know if that dental professional will be the one who becomes your favorite.

Word of mouth recommendations are often the best, but beware: you may or may not want to take the advice of your ex-spouse when choosing a dentist. Ask around and you should hear both positive and negative recommendations. Your child’s teacher, the neighbor, even the bank teller could have the very name you are looking to find.

Search the Internet or real world yellow pages to find a dentist. Narrow down the list by location and the type of service you need. Call each one to pre-screen before you make an appointment.

The person answering the telephone reflects the attitudes of the entire office and is your first point of contact with the dentist. If the receptionist is crabby and rude, find a different dentist.

The American Dental Association keeps a list of dental professionals by state and city. If you are moving to a new place, finding a doctor and dentist should be top priorities, but if you don’t know anyone there, this can be difficult. Consult the ADA website for some names to look into.

Your family doctor may be able to help you find a dentist by professional reputation. Nobody in the world knows you inside and out like your family doctor, so any recommendation can probably be trusted.

When you sign up for dental insurance, you should receive a list of providers with your dental insurance benefits package. Most all care dental plans will only reimburse services performed by particular dentists; you must pay for services from dentists who are not on the list. Most plans have a fairly extensive list of providers to help you find a dentist. Call the ones that seem appropriate to pre-screen their services.

Find a favorite dentist before you need one. That way, when you need dental care for any reason, emergency or not, you will know exactly who to call first. While you are hanging around your mechanic’s waiting room to get the car fixed, use that time wisely to secure the services of a good dentist!
