Understanding Your Debtal Coverage

If you currently have dental coverage, consider yourself lucky. Up to 70% of Americans do not carry any type of dental care insurance, leaving them wide open to costly services and surgeries. Whether you currently have or are looking for an all care dental plan, there are certain aspects of your (proposed) plan that you should be well aware of.

A habit of many prospective dental coverage customers is that they are blindsided by only considering the deductible level of a given plan, then are surprised at the high costs associated with it. Lesson one in understanding dental coverage is that the lower the deductible, the higher the premium will be. Lowering your deductible asks the insurance company to cover more of your costs, and these must be recouped in some way.

If you are looking to save money on your all care dental plan, consider a high-deductible option that will considerably lower your monthly premium. However, this will increase your annual exposure to higher dental care bills.

This may not always be a negative aspect though; if you normally only visit the dentist for regular checkups and x-rays and generally have good oral health, this may be a great option. These high-deductible plans will still cover you in the event of an emergency, and will typically still discount your regular services just for carrying the dental coverage.

Lesson Two in understanding your dental coverage is the importance of whether your dentist is considered an in-network or out-of-network provider. Most all care dental plans will cover both, but out-of-network dentists will only be eligible for lower levels of discounts. This is still much better than paying full price for your dental visits!

If you do not currently have a regular dentist and are searching for new coverage, most insurance companies will offer a list of “participating” or “preferred” dentists in your area. Just as with any health professional, your dentist should be chosen with care. However, this list of dentists will give you a great starting point in finding the lowest-cost dental care using your new dental coverage.

Alternatively, you may have a regular dentist but are searching for new dental coverage. If this is your case, ask your dentist’s office which plans he or she accepts and participates in. They may have a preferred insurance plan that will offer you the highest discounts on the services you regularly receive there.

Lesson Three applies to searching for your new dental coverage. If your dentist accepts preferred plans, start by contacting the insurance company. You must understand that every company offers different plans with various deductible and premium levels, and well as coverage amounts.

Ask the company which plans they offer that fit into your budget of X amount of dollars, or that offer the highest coverage's on things like fillings, x-rays and cleanings. If you have children that may need braces or wisdom teeth removed in the near future, this particular coverage level may be the most important to you.

Finally, Lesson Four involves paying cash for uncovered or under-covered services at your dentist’s office. If you can’t afford an all care dental plan that includes every service you require, many offices will offer discounts for paying cash up-front; every dentist is different, but if you explain your position they may be able to work with you and still deliver the services you require to stay healthy.
